The Alaska Colony High School marching band is going to Washington, D.C.

After receiving donations and raising money in the 11th hour, the band will respectfully decline any funding from the Mat-Su Borough School Board to help it get to the Jan. 20 Inauguration, according to a letter provided to the Frontiersman.

Lynn Gattis, secretary of the Knights Music Boosters, a group that raises money for the band, says in the letter that the band has almost reached its financial goal for the inaugural parade.
He cited the honor of being chosen to come all the way from Alaska to play in Washington.

“I told those kids ‘you make sure you let those folks know where you’re from,’” Allen said.

MSNBC host mugged in D.C.

Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty was confronted face-to-face Thursday with some of the district’s crime problems, when it turned out the host of the morning talk show he appeared on had been mugged in the city an hour earlier.

MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski was mugged outside the Ritz Carlton in Georgetown at about 5 a.m. while waiting for a car to pick her up for the 6 a.m. broadcast of the show she co-hosts with Joe Scarborough, “Morning Joe.”

The anchors did not disclose on air the location or name of the hotel, and did not respond to a question via email, but Mrs. Brzezinski later told the Washington Post it was the Ritz.
