January 6, 2009 – Obama: I’ll Have Plenty To Say About Gaza War After Jan. 20th Source:News One
On Palestinian Question, Tough Choices for Obama
With the rule of Hamas in Gaza apparently unchallenged and its popularity growing in the West Bank, the new Obama administration faces an immediate policy choice: support a Palestinian unity government, as Egypt and the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, want, or continue to isolate Hamas and concentrate on building up the West Bank as a political alternative to radical Islam. OBAMA: Yes, look. I will repeat what I’ve said before. We can’t have two administrations running foreign policy at the same time. We simply can’t do it. And so, as a consequence, what I am doing is I am being briefed consistently. My national security team is fully up to speed on it.
But the situation of domestic policymaking and foreign policymaking are two different things. We cannot be sending a message to the world that there are two different administrations conducting foreign policy. That is not safe for the American people.
Obviously, I am deeply concerned about the status of what’s going to be taking place, what’s been taking place in Gaza. And as I said yesterday, I am doing everything that we have to do to make sure that the day that I take office, we are prepared to engage immediately in trying to deal with the situation there.
And not only the short-term situation, but building a process whereby we can achieve a more lasting peace in the region. But until I take office, it would be imprudent of me to start sending out signals that somehow we are running foreign policy when I am not legally authorized to do so. Read More

Obama to pursue Middle East peace
U.S. President Barack Obama pledged on Wednesday to pursue Middle East peace, telephoning Israeli and Palestinian leaders after Israel completed a troop withdrawal from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
In a call to Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Obama reiterated that he and his administration would work to achieve Middle East peace, a Palestinian official said.

A statement from Olmert’s office said the prime minister updated Obama on the situation in the Gaza Strip and added that he hoped efforts by Israel, Egypt, the U.S. and European countries to prevent weapons smuggling into Gaza would succeed. Read More

U.S. foreign policy: Who’s in charge?
The Mitchell appointment puts the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the hands of an experienced power player and deal-maker, but leaves unresolved some of the lines of command in the new administration.
“George is renowned, in this country and around the world, for his negotiating skill,” Obama said. “He will be fully empowered at the negotiating table and he will sustain our focus on the goal of peace.” Obama added that he favored a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Mitchell Report’s focus on settlements comes as Israeli leaders are increasingly resigned to the notion that an Obama administration will push them to remove illegal settlements where Bush did not, but that portion of the report drew criticism from the American Jewish right as the appointment leaked out.
