Obama’s economic team is in full meltdown

Paul Kanjorski, a Pennsylvania Democrat who chairs the relevant subcommittee on the House Financial Services Committee, suggested the administration isn’t being honest about its knowledge of the bonuses. He said yesterday: “I’m sick and tired of hearing the administration and the secretary of the Treasury say, ‘I just found out about it.’ That’s not true, and if he did just find out about it on Thursday or Wednesday then he better get to his mail department and to his telephone people because we communicated with the Treasury at least six or seven times.”

Chris Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, is scrambling mightily to avoid having the entire bonus mess laid at his feet. He blamed Treasury department staffers for inserting language into the stimulus bill that protected the bonuses. Dodd warned about the consequences of further mistakes, telling CNN: “The public confidence in our ability is being adversely affected — not just mildly, but seriously.” Charles Rangel, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, complained that the White House isn’t offering thoughts on how to recover the bonuses.

Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon, faulted the White House for sending “mixed messages.”

Mixed messages, indeed. As his economic team is full meltdown,

Six Democratic members of Congress enjoyed a Caribbean junket sponsored by Citigroup after Congress had approved the $700 billion bailout (Holy Cow!!!)

Six Democratic members of Congress enjoyed a Caribbean junket sponsored by Citigroup after Congress had approved the $700 billion bailout of financial services firms in October.

The National Legal and Policy Center, a watchdog group, has asked Neil Barofsky, the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, for a formal review of the Citigroup’s sponsorship of the trip by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel and five others.

The NLPC says the trip violated House rules.

Citigroup should have also been aware that corporate sponsorship of such an event was banned by House rules adopted on March 1, 2007, in response to the [lobbyist Jack] Abramoff scandal and the infamous golf trip to Scotland.”

In addition to Rangel, other members of Congress who attended were Donald Payne of New Jersey, Sheila Jackson-Lee of Texas, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick of Michigan, Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, and Donna Christensen, the delegate to the House from the United States Virgin Islands.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) among politicians giving up money from Bernie Madoff

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) Monday led a long list of officeholders and groups expected to give up more than $430,000 in political contributions from Bernie Madoff and his family.

“My money, I’m returning,” Schumer said. The $6,000 Madoff gave him over the years would be sent to charity, he said.

The $100,000 Madoff donated to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, run by Schumer until last month, should also be returned, but “that is their decision,” Schumer said.

President-elect Barack Obama received at least $2,800 in Madoff money, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) $4,600 and other politicians lesser amounts, including $1,000 each to Reps. Charles Rangel (D-Manhattan) and Vito Fossella (R-S.I.).
