According to indictments, Daniel Patrick Boyd, also known as “Saifullah,” and the other defendants conspired to provide resources to terrorists over the last three years.

During July 2007, Daniel Boyd traveled to Israel with several of the other defendants, hoping to engage in “violent jihad” that included “supporting and participating in terrorist activities abroad and committing acts of murder, kidnapping or maiming persons,” according to the indictment. They failed in their efforts, and the men returned home, the indictment stated.

A list of items seized from the home was not available Monday night. The indictments allege Boyd obtained a variety of weapons to support his efforts including: a Bushmaster M4A3 rifle, an ETA M16 V System C-MAG and a Ruger mini 14 long gun. Read More

Israel Stopped NC Jihad Suspect’s Family in 2007
Israel denied entry two years ago to members of a North Carolina family that includes three men accused of plotting to execute terror attacks in foreign countries, an official said Wednesday.

In 2007, Daniel and Zakariya Boyd were denied entry to Israel at the airport in Tel Aviv, detained for two days, then flown to France, she said. The newspaper didn’t say whether Israeli authorities gave the men a reason for denying them entry.

Prosecutors said Boyd received terrorist training years ago in Pakistan and brought the teachings back to North Carolina, recruiting followers willing to die as martyrs waging jihad _ the Arabic word for holy war.

Frustrated by Raleigh-area mosques that he saw as too moderate, Boyd started breaking away this year to hold prayers in his home, prosecutors said. In the last two months, he took two group members to private property in north-central North Carolina to practice military tactics and use weapons.

“It’s clear from the indictment that the overt acts in the conspiracy were escalating,” U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding said.Read More

The county morgue, which is responsible for the indigent and others who go unclaimed, saw a 25% increase in cremations in the first half of this year over the same period a year ago, rising to 680 from 545.

The demands on the county crematorium have been so high that earlier this year, officials there stopped accepting bodies from the coroner. The coroner’s office since has contracted with two private crematories for $135,000 to handle the overflow.

“It’s a pretty dramatic increase,” said Lt. David Smith, a coroner’s investigator. “The families just tell us flat-out they don’t have the money to do a funeral.”
