New Tax Proposals Target Life Insurers Will Cost Poor and Rich Alike!

The Obama administration is seeking $12.8 billion in new tax revenue from life insurers over the next decade, even as the federal government offers the struggling sector bailout funds.

Several industry trade groups, including the American Council of Life Insurers and the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting, wrote last week to leading lawmakers, expressing opposition to the proposals. “Especially during a financial and economic downturn, increasing taxes on products and on an industry that encourages American consumers and businesses to plan for the future and effectively manage risk is unwise public policy,” they said.

Insurance industry representatives also argue that now is a bad time to seek more taxes from the industry, given companies’ recent losses on investments.

John Ashcroft, Robert Mueller Cannot Be Sued for Alleged Abuse

In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled Monday that several high-ranking government officials cannot be sued for their official actions in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The opinion, authored by Justice Anthony Kennedy and joined by the court’s conservative justices, upholds long-standing immunity protections given to government officers for their official duties.

Iqbal, a Pakistani Muslim, claimed the FBI policy was so targeted toward Muslim men that it was discriminatory.

NYT Admits It Spiked OBAMA And ACORN Corruption Story

On March 17, a Republican lawyer, quoting a confidential source for a Times reporter, testified to Congress that the newspaper killed a story last fall because it would have been “a game-changer” in the presidential election.

The story involved allegations that Barack Obama’s campaign, in league with Acorn, a left-leaning community activist group, was guilty of technical violations of campaign finance law. Evidence supplied by the source could not be verified. Even if the story had panned out, it is hard to see how any editor could have regarded it as momentous enough to change an election in which the Republicans were saddled with an unpopular war and an economic meltdown.
