Strictly, you’re correct. The O’s approach to planning generally seems more “corporatist” — fascist, in other words — than purely socialist. Still statist, choice-limiting, and wildly inefficient.

Rather more to it than you think. None of these countries is as racially heterogenous as the US, for instance, and life spans vary according to race, among other things.

Did you know that health care is already rationed in the United States? It’s rationed by the ability of individuals to pay. It is indeed. Under the socialized regimes, it’s still rationed by ability to pay, though, in this case that of taxpayers. All goods are rationed, one way or another, in this vail of tears. What we dislke is the inefficiency and state coercion that invariably goes along with the socialist rationing solution. Canadians can cross the border to get the care they’re willing and able to pay for. Once the US is socialized, the last, best hope of a hip replacement before 2017 will be gone. We’ll be well and truly screwed then, my little jag. Socialized health care will be the end of us.

First, a definition: socialized medicine = doctors are government employees like they are in England. Obama’s plans don’t include that. You just use the phrase to frighten in ignorant.

Second, America’s health care system doesn’t deliver as well as you think. Americans have a lower life expectancy than Brits, French, Canadians, Germans, Fins, Spainiards, Swiss, Swedes, Singapore, Japanese… and the list goes on. That’s an important measure of our current system’s failures.

Insurance companies control that now and they’re accountable only to shareholders, not to the public. We need to have a debate about health care in America, but we need data instead of demagogues. Don’t rush (or Rush) to condemn Obama’s plan until you read it for yourself.
