Blago: State lawmakers cheat on spouses, drink too much

Refusing to go quietly, former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich spat a new round of venom today at the same lawmakers who drove him out from office, accusing them of having affairs and drinking too much while being “holier than thou.”

“This is how the system in Springfield works, where a bunch of these lawmakers go down to Springfield,” Blagojevich said. “Nobody even knows who they are. They’re away from their families. It’s a whole different world down there. A bunch of them are cheating on their spouses.

“A lot of them drink in excess. Very few of them know what’s going on. They just take their marching orders from legislative leaders, and then the legislative leaders have to do things for them to keep them happy,”Blagojevich told WLS-AM’s “Don Wade and Roma Show.”

“I don’t want to be too judgmental. But these same guys get up and they get holier than thou on their soapboxes, and there they are doing that sort of thing, promoting that kind of thing,” he said.   Read More

World stocks fall on skepticism over U.S. bank plan

World stock markets were mostly lower Wednesday following a steep sell-off on Wall Street, as investors reacted with skepticism to the U.S. government’s latest plan to rescue the ailing financial industry with as much as $2 trillion in funding.

By noon in mainland Europe, Britain’s FTSE 100 was down 0.04 percent at 4,211.30 and France’s CAC 40 slipped 0.3 percent at 3,013.28. Germany’s DAX scraped into positive territory and was up 0.1 percent at 4,511.95.

Nearly ever major market in Asia retreated, further hurt by new figures showing China’s exports plunged 17.5 percent in January — the sharpest drop in more than a decade.
