UPDATE 07 FEB – 9/11 Families Outraged with Barack Obamas’ Call to Stop Guantanamo War Crimes Trials
Family members of people killed on September 11, 2001, and in other terror attacks say they are outraged by President Obama’s draft order calling for the suspension of war crimes trials of prisoners being held at Guantanamo Bay.
“To me it’s beyond comprehension that they would take the side of the terrorists,” said Peter Gadiel, whose son, James, was killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11. “Many of these people have been released and been right back killing, right back at their terrorist work again.”

A new Pentagon report may complicate Obama’s plans for Gitmo.
The decision to release additional case studies from the report is in effect a warning shot to the new president from officials at the Pentagon and U.S. intelligence agencies who are skeptical about some of his plans. Some Pentagon officials, including ones sympathetic to Obama’s goals, note the political outcry would be deafening should another example like Al-Shihri become public six months from now—and it turns out be a Guantanamo detainee released under Obama’s watch rather than by the Bush administration. “The last thing Obama wants is for one of these guys [at Guantanamo] to get released and return to killing Americans,” said one senior Defense Department official who asked not to be identified because of the political sensitivities.
Top Obama administration officials have privately acknowledged that the problem of still dangerous detainees at Guantanamo is more worrisome than some of president’s campaign statements might suggest.

Obama why are you siding with the terrorist? Why are you rushing to stop trials and closing Gitmo? Don’t you have any respect for the families with members killed by terrorist? 3000 or more Americans killed on 9/11, burned alive was women and children, dads and moms, grandmothers and grandfathers! In Iraq sons and daugthers killed and some beheaded by these terrorist and you want to stop trials! Obama you expect the American people to respect you so why can you not show the American people the same kind of respect? Americans we have another election in 4 years and also one two year from now to clean out congress once and for all!

I don’t want to hear a single word of protestation from the constituents who put this money-grubbing, security-undermining fool back into office. As you vote, so shall you reap.
I have to say GTP, we knew before the election he was “friends” with known terrorists, but Americans still voted for him. I don’t think the majority of them will change their minds. They are drinking the kool-aid, and the kool-aid is tainted. I didn’t know any of the victims of 9-11, but friends of mine lost friends and loved ones. The pain they went through was horrible. They were military and the first thing they wanted was revenge. They tried to get sent overseas, but got denied. By doing what he’s doing he is opening old wounds, and just plain pi**ing people off, but he doesn’t care, he’s in for the next four years. His lemmings will follow him no matter what he does.
I say he should be charged with treason, he’s helping known terrorists get free so they can attack America again! For those of you who think they won’t, get your head out of the sand!

Did Obama order the detainees set free? No, just that their trials be suspended/postponed until their cases can be reviewed. As you may have heard, quite a few cases are shaky to non-existent.
Do you think closing Gitmo will result in the automatic release of all the detainees? Not. Most will be moved to other prisons or returned to their home countries for trial.
Many Gitmo detainees are being held without any real evidence against them. Being a detainee is not the same as being a terrorist, just as being arrested doesn’t make one a criminal.
Detainees need to be tried and then jailed or freed as judges or juries decide. That’s justice.
Gitmo has become an global symbol of injustice, not to mention a perfect tool for recruiting terrorists. America is going to spend decades undoing the damage to our international prestige and moral authority that Bush has wrought.

Jag, some of your points aren’t clear

You’re saying that the families of terror victims are not outraged by the move? If that’s not what you’re saying, then how has Fox mis-reported the story?
2) As you may have heard, quite a few cases are shaky to non-existent.
Isn’t that what the tribunals were established to decide, whether the charges in particular cases have merit? What “non-existent” cases are you aware of that were scheduled for prosecution?
3) Detainees need to be tried and then jailed or freed as judges or juries decide. That’s justice.
That’s what was happening. If Obama wants the terrorists tried in civil courts, fine; but let’s get on with it.

JAG-Do you understand that by closing GITMO, the “detainees” will be brought to the US prisons? We have angry US prisoners that think they were unfairly imprisoned, how likely do you think it is, that these “detainees” start recruiting? If they didn’t hate America before they do now. The man that orchestrated 9-11 is in there! What do you think he’s been doing? Writing poetry? Wake up and smell the roses.
If they commited a crime in our country, they should go to trial in our country. Just like the kid that got caned in Singapor. Our 9-11 families need closure, and moving the detainees to the states and letting them get lost in our prison system is NOT the answer.

Good point, helochick. European prisons, with large Muslim inmate populations (thanks to the idiotic immigration policies the Yurps have pursued), are notorious recruiting offices for radicals.
