Democrat N.Y. Lawmaker Charged With Felony

Queens Democrat Hiram Monserrate, a former police officer who later represented the 21st District on the New York City Council, was sworn in as a state senator this week despite his serious and mounting legal problems.

A few weeks ago Monserrate was arrested and charged with felony assault for beating, dragging and slashing the face of his girlfriend (Karla Giraldo) with a piece of broken glass in a jealous rage. The incident was captured on a security surveillance video and several witnesses say they heard the violent ordeal.

Evidently, it’s not enough to keep him from collecting a $92,000 annual salary ($79,500 plus $12,500 to chair a committee) represent New Yorkers and chair the Senate’s Consumer Protection Committee.

  1. It’s wrong when any politician abuses the trust that the public puts in him/her, regardless of party.

Does your version of Google only search for Democratic scandals? It must, because the Democrats surely haven’t cornered the market. Impropriety and immorality, being human conditions, cut across party lines.

Maybe it seems that there are more Democrats caught up in this because Americans are electing more Democrats than Republicans?

And for me, personally, if I were in the voting booth and my ONLY choices were Hiram Monserrate or Big Dick Cheney (and I HAD to choose one) I’d opt for Monserrate. At least nasty old Hiram hasn’t sent thousands of American kids to their death in an unnecessary war in Iraq AND pocketed millions funneled to Big Dick’s personal little Federeal Reserve called Halliburton.

But Monserrate still sounds like pond scum.

  2. Sorry but Big Dick Cheney isn’t the one being impeached, but I’m happy that you’re still thinking of the great Vice President!

  3. “”"”"At least nasty old Hiram hasn’t sent thousands of American kids to their death in an unnecessary war in Iraq AND pocketed millions funneled to Big Dick’s personal little Federeal Reserve called Halliburton.”"”"”

First let me say, those of us in the Military are here by choice. We knew what we were getting into when we swore our oath. Do you realize there are more deaths here in the US due to drugs and alcohol than the war? Do you have any idea how many people have come home from the sandbox after a year and been killed here in the US within 6 months? Look it up. These American kids were sent to war by Clinton as well.

  4. The democrats bad mouths President Bush and Dick Cheney when they need to look at the democrat leadership now! Just a few more days and Barack Hussein Obama will have to take responibility for his own policies which he will find out that he will not make all people happy, and maybe more unhappy.
You are right helochick when you say military men and women are in the military cause they want to be, not because they have to be!

  5. Spin all you want: Bushie and the Big Dick sent those kids to Iraq in an unnecessary war of choice. Are you seriously suggesting that they were sent to Iraq for their health, to keep them from dying here in the U.S. due to drugs and alcohol? It’s the Big Dick’s Club Med plan?

I don’t recall the war where Clinton sent 4,226 to their death and another 30,934 to injuries.

And as for our folks being there “by choice” they chose to enlist in the military, but they didn’t choose the war in Iraq. Bushie and the Big Dick chose this war, in every sense of the word.

  6. Bushie and the Big Dick chose this war, in every sense of the word.

What, exactly, does that mean? Which word?

Just out of curiosity, are all “wars of choice” bad? And when is a war not a war of choice? After all, surrender is always an option.

  7. After two and a half years of being in Iraq, March 2003 through November 2005, the number of US Soliders killed in action (1501) was close to the number killed on a single day during World War II in just ONE location: Normandy on June 6, 1944. A single day in WWII. I think our numbers are pretty freakin good compaired to what they could be.

“And as for our folks being there “by choice” they chose to enlist in the military, but they didn’t choose the war in Iraq. Bushie and the Big Dick chose this war, in every sense of the word.”

From the time I enlisted in 1995 I knew there was a posibility of going to war, they tell you that when you enlist. What do you think the military is for? Sitting around a campfire singing KOOMBYFREAKINGYA? Wake up! We have fighter jets, heavy lift helos, guns, bombs, mines, rescue aircraft, nuclear subs and war ships. What on God’s green Earth are they for? A really big game of Battleship?

“Spin all you want: Bushie and the Big Dick sent those kids to Iraq in an unnecessary war of choice. Are you seriously suggesting that they were sent to Iraq for their health, to keep them from dying here in the U.S. due to drugs and alcohol? It’s the Big Dick’s Club Med plan?”

I didn’t “spin” anything, I just stated the facts. Too bad if you don’t like it. Where did you get that I was suggesting they were sent there for their health? Are you dilusional? SERIOUSLY? Coming from someone that actually served my country to protect your freedom of speach that you seem to love so much, I can tell you, I knew and so did everyone else I served and am still serving with, that war is always a possibility. They train us everyday for it. That’s why we are here. They also have the option to NOT go. They end up in the brig and it’s considered disrespectful to our country in the eyes of other military members, but they don’t have to go.

They call the people that joined the military after 9-11, “9-11 recruits”. The most famous 9/11 recruit was Pat Tillman, the NFL star who gave up a big contract to join the Army and was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan. Do you think he knew he might go to war? Don’t speak for people you don’t know.

  8. Thanks, helochick, for that fisking. And thank you for all that you and your brothers and sisters in arms are doing.

    Oooooooobama, kumbaya …

  9. Oooooooobama, kumbaya …
Thanks for the laugh and thanks for supporting the troops….I get pretty upset when people that don’t know about the military try to tell me about my job and choices……

  10. I’m not telling you your job. I’m talking about the politicians in the White House who scammed you and the country.

Your earlier point was that people die all the time, whether in Iraq or here at home. The percentages are different, however.

As for all wars being wars of choice, technically you’re right, if you consider surrender a choice. Most logical folks take it to mean that, for instance, WWII was a war of necessity, in that we were attacked by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. We were NOT attacked by Iraq; they had nothing to do with 9/11. So, in current times, the argument would be that the war in Afghanistan is a war of necessity (going after al Qaeda, who was responsible for 9/11) but the war in Iraq is a war of choice. Bushie and the Big Dick wanted this badly; Bushie to avenge his daddy, and the Big Dick to make he and his friends at Halliburton $$$$.

  11. It was Iraq who scammed the United Nations whom we are a member of! Remember the oil for food scam of Iraq?
The first Iraq war never ended only went into a crease fire and American planes were being fired at! Get your head on straight diogenes and I sure hope you’re not teaching kids this nonsense thats in your head! Quit drinking the kool-aid!

  12. The UN never gave us any authorization to go into Iraq to enforce the UN edicts, so don’t try that scam. We invaded Iraq without UN approval… not that Bushie or the Big Dick needed anybody’s approval for anything. Their motto is READY-FIRE-AIM.

Do we go to war every time an American plane gets fired at? Of course not.

GTP, you need to quit drinking the Bushie-Big Dick Kool Aid. We invaded Iraq, period.

  13. “And helo? 9/11 recruits should have expected to fight in Afghanistan, because that’s where al Qaeda was. There was no al Qaeda in Iraq until we invaded. That’s a big difference.”

That’s not how the military works. They don’t just join and go straight there….there’s boot camp, then school which can range from 6 weeks to 3 years. They are all told that when they join and pick a job depending on their ASVAB score.
I had over a year of training before I actually got to my first command. Then there’s the fact that the military are stationed all over the world. We usually don’t get to pick our first command.

“Your earlier point was that people die all the time, whether in Iraq or here at home. The percentages are different, however.”

No, my point was you are throwing numbers out saying the death toll is high, but we as military and Americans have no real control over that. We do however have control over drugs and alcohol. Fight a war you can win.

And for the record, I do not feel I got scammed into fighting for my country, I’d make the same choice again, even knowing about 9-11. The only difference would be I would’ve never gone to shore duty and missed the chance to go to the sand box.

FYI…..What is never compared is the number of military deaths during the Clinton administration: 1,245 in 1993; 1,109 in 1994; 1,055 in 1995; 1,008 in 1996. That’s 4,417 deaths in peacetime but, of course, who’s counting?

  14. The UN never gave us any authorization to go into Iraq to enforce the UN edicts, so don’t try that scam. We invaded Iraq without UN approval

No, were any authorization required (surely, you’re not a “global test” kinda guy), we would have had all we needed in the 1990 resolutions. As I recall, it was the late, unlamented Tony Blair who insisted on seeking a fresh resolution.

  15. Also we have to remember that the United Nations was in on the Iraq oil for food scam! I have always said that the UN was useless and I still stick by my opinion!
We didn’t need the UN approval when our planes had been fired on, we didn’t need UN approval when the first Iraq war had not ended, because it was a crease fire that Iraq broke! The United States will really be in trouble if and when the United Nations has the say so of when we go to war!

  16. Helochick, hats off to you and your comrades , hang in there, Many, many appreciate what you have chosen to do.
