The views of President Vaclav Klaus of the Czech Republic, 67, have left the government of Mirek Topolanek, his bitter opponent, determined to keep him as far away as possible from the EU presidency, which it took over from France yesterday.

The Czech president, who caused a diplomatic incident by dining with opponents of the EU’s Lisbon treaty on a recent visit to Ireland, has a largely ceremonial role.  Read More

Hamas Orders Suicide Bombings Against ‘Zionists Everywhere’

 

Israeli warplanes pounded militant targets including a mosque in Gaza on Friday as Hamas ordered a “day of wrath” against Israel over the killing of a senior commander.

Thousands of Israeli security personnel were on alert after Hamas called for “massive marches” following the main weekly Muslim prayers, starting off from the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem and from all mosques in the West Bank.

“After the last crime, all options are open to counter this aggression, including martyr operations against Zionist targets everywhere,” Hamas official Ismail Radwan vowed after the attack.  Read More

A group of Democratic governors said Friday they want $1 trillion in federal assistance

A group of Democratic governors warned Friday that without as much as $1 trillion in federal assistance, many states will not be able to pay their bills in the next year.

In order to make up for the shortfalls, Corzine said the incoming Obama administration and Congress will need to free up $1 trillion in federal spending for state assistance.

Does not this amount to $1 trillion in earmarks?  Was it Barack that said he would do away with earmarks and go thu the budget page by page and remove anything that was waste?
