David Paterson, the New York governor, has been told he would be guilty of “political malpractice” (Caroline Kennedy)

Kevin Sheekey, senior political aide to Michael Bloomberg, the mayor, said this week: “The idea that we would pass up appointing someone to the Senate who is both a friend and a critical supporter of Barack Obama is political malpractice.”

What was described by New York political observers as Mr Sheekey’s “extraordinary” intervention has now highlighted Mr Bloomberg’s apparent interest in an outcome that would effectively give New York a hotline to the White House. Read More

One of the original legal challenges to President-elect Barack Obama’s eligibility for office to reach the U.S. Supreme Court now has been scheduled for a conference, a meeting at which the justices discuss its merits and whether to step into the fray.

His original claim remains on track to be heard.

50 Percent Hike in Fuel Taxes to Fund Highway Construction

A 50 percent increase in gasoline and diesel fuel taxes is being urged by a federal commission to finance highway construction and repair until the government devises another way for motorists to pay for using public roads.

A tax increase on this order would be politically treacherous for Democratic leaders in Congress — a gas tax hike was one of the reasons they lost control of the House and Senate in the 1994 elections. Read More
