The three armed thefts – from 8:45 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. — in the city were in the three-block area bounded by the Wilco-Hess Trademart convenience store at the corner of the U.S. 701 Bypass and Burkhead Street north to the parking area at the county library.

The first incident took place at 8:45 p.m. at the East Wind Chinese restaurant at the corner of the bypass and College Street. Two armed black males went into the restaurant and ordered an employee to open the cash register.

At 9:08 p.m., three teenagers were robbed by two black males in the county library parking area. A police report noted two male teens were outside their vehicle talking to a female teen in her car.

Brenton Allen Britt, 19, of Rough-N-Ready Road, Whiteville, and Justin Gray Reynolds, 20, of Lee Ward Road, Nakina, were robbed at 11:45 p.m. in the Trademart parking area.

A report showed the males were approached by two armed black males and told to give their wallets to the robbers. Reynolds was struck in the face by a pistol during the robbery. The victims lost cash, credit cards and identification documents.

When I debated economist Steven Levitt over crime in Slate in 1999, he asked me what my prediction for future crime trends was: I replied that I figured that black teens are currently benefiting from the example of their many older brothers and cousins whom the crack wars left in jail, wheelchairs, or cemeteries, but that eventually a new cohort of black teens would come along without direct experience of the horrors of crack wars of 1988-1994, and the homicide rate would go back up again.
